Show Miles withdraws from sheriffs race; will seek Senate seat 22 By PAULA HUFF George Miles has dropped his campaign for Davis County Sheriff and plans to concentrate on running for the Senate seat in District 22. Mr. Miles filed for both positions and ran unopposed in the August primary election. Now he will concentrate on the race against Republican Senator Haven S. Barlow, a Layton resident who has held the District 22 seat for 34 years. Also the Democratic Party Chairman, Mr. Miles said he dropped out of the sheriff race so his constituents would consider him a "serious" "se-rious" candidate. "As I was going around talking to people, I realized they weren't considering me a serious candidate," Mr. Miles said. "They wanted to know which campaign I really wanted to win." Lack of funds for running two campaigns was another consideration, the 39-year-old Kaysville man said. Mr. Miles said his background makes him a better candidate for the district seat. He gradu ated from the University of Utah with a political politic-al science degree, worked for six years in law enforcement and eight years for the state department de-partment of social services. Now he owns Micro Mic-ro Mania, a home computer business. Mr. Miles said he originally filed for the Sheriff position because he was "frustrated" that eight county offices were going unopposed. un-opposed. "I just wanted to make a statement and have some Democrats on the ballot." A Democratic candidate has not won a race in Davis County for six years. In years to come, Mr. Miles hopes to see a better example of a two party system in the county. "I would like to see Davis County as a two party system," he said. "A two party system assures that there are checks and balances." Democrats have lost their places in Davis County government because many people consider con-sider them "liberals," Mr. Miles said. "But most Democrats are as conservative or more conservative than Republicans. Davis County Democrats are tainted by the national Democratic public image." |
