Show Davis domination leads to 17-6 region victory By TOM HARALDSEN BOUNTIFUL If there's one word that best describes the reason for Davis' 17-6 victory over Bountiful Boun-tiful Friday night, it's domination. The Darts dominated the ball, and the offensive line dominated the Braves defensive line. The result was the Dart's fourth win of the season and second in league ac- them punting. Both punts were short and gave Davis good field position. But Davis squandered the first opportunity when they lost still another fumble at the Bountiful 46. After holding the Braves, a 14 yard punt gave Davis the ball back at its 40. Mainly behind the rushing of superback Warden, the Darts drove 60 yards in 10 plays, only But on fourth and one from the nine. Covey slipped on the wet turf, eventually being stopped short of a first down. Davis' offense suddenly went cold, and the Darts got no closer than the Brave's 24 in the second half. With just under three minutes to go, Bountiful began another long drive. On a chilly homecoming night at Bountiful, it looked for awhile like the Braves might finally beat Davis in Region Four action (they never have since the region was formed several years ago). Bountiful turned one of six Davis fumbles into an early TD. But from then on, the Darts took control, mainly in time of possession. Davis received the kickoff, but couldn't move on its first possession. posses-sion. On the ensuing punt. Bountiful Bounti-ful was called for roughing the kicker, giving Davis the ball back at its 34. Rob Warden and Curt Stoddard each picked up a first down, moving to the Bountiful 43. But on the next play, Bountiful's Chad Rigby reached into a pile of players and grabbed the ball. He was off to the races, 57 yards for a TD ala the famous Davis Mountain View, Rob Warden steal of last year's 4A playoffs, and it was 6-0 when Kent Liston's PAT sailed wide right. Davis began again, driving this time to the Brave 18 before losing the ball again on another fumble. Finally the Bountiful offense got to play, and on first down, senior Sid Smith, who sat out two games with a separated shoulder, took the handoff and ran 29 yards to the 41 (welcome back, Sid). But QB Joe Covey was hit as he was trying to pass on the next play, the officials ruling it a fumble. Davis took over at the Braves' 35, and scored five plays later when Travis Jackson went in on a 20 yard scamper. Rodney Rod-ney Flood made it 7-6 for Davis. Bountiful then began the first of two straight series that resulted in two of them passes, with Warden scoring from the six with 3 :06 left in the half. Flood's kick made it 14-6. The Darts got three more just before half, moving from their 33 to the Bountiful 27 in five plays. With two seconds left, Flood knuckled a 44 yard field goal to make it 17-6 at half. To show the Dart domination of the ball, at halftime Davis had 13 first downs to one for Bountiful. Davis already had 156 yards rushing on 30 attempts, while Bountiful had rushed 1 1 times for 45 yards. And Reed Secrist of Davis had connected on six of seven passes for 82 yards, while Covey had yet to throw a pass. Davis ran 37 offensive plays to 1 1 for Bountiful. While no one scored in the second half, Bountiful did have some near misses. On its second offensive series of the third period, the Braves started on their 28. Covey hit Ryan Jacobs for an eight yard completion, and then Smith picked up three for a first down. From the 39, Covey swept left and rambled 43 yards to the Davis 18. Covey, moved the Braves to the Dart 18 again. But four incomplete passes, the final one coming on a fake field goal attempt, killed the last Bountiful hope. All told, Davis ran 61 times to 25 for Bountiful, and had a total of 70 offensive plays to 36 for the Braves. Davis joins Highland at 2-0 in league play, while Bountiful is now 1-1 in region and 3-2 overall. HIGHLAND 32 WOODS CROSS 0 The Rams ruined things for Woods Cross with their fifth vic- |
