Show Braves show their stuff in exciting WX victory killed a shot at the net to give Bountiful Boun-tiful the win. Sophomore Stephanie Reading was impressive in her first start for the Braves, who were playing without Sue Stahle. Avery said the win was important for Bountiful, which won only two matches last league season and now faces Davis at home Tuesday and travels to East on Thursday. Woods Cross is 1-1, with games this week against East (on the road) Tuesday and at home versus Viewmont Thursday. In other action Thursday, Viewmont View-mont remained tied with East for ' the league lead with a 15-7 and 15-13 15-13 win at Davis. The Vikings remain re-main a strong team, outlasting a Davis squad that has failed to 0-2. Julie Stuart and Becky Yeates led the Vikes, while Heather Peel, Becky Long and Kristen Packer paced Davis. East also beat Highland High-land 15-8 15-8 to move to 2-0, while the Rams fell to 0-2. Viewmont hosts Highland Tuesday and goes to Woods Cross Thursday. By TOM HARALDSEN BOUNTIFUL If you're a fan of the Bountiful volleyball team, there's good news. The Lady Braves not only had a chance to win a big match Thursday evening, they did it. No choke, no floundering flounder-ing away a lead. As a result, the Region Four race looks like a five-team five-team affair this year. Bountiful delayed everyone in-. volved in getting to "Back to School Night" with an exciting three-game victory over Woods Cross. The scores were 16-14, ISIS, IS-IS, 18-16. You can't get closer than that. And considering that Woods Cross is a very good team, considering consid-ering that Bountiful garnered the victory without a starter, and further furth-er that it had to come from behind and fight off two match points to do it, the Braves must now be considered consi-dered a real threat for a state playoff play-off berth. "I think we learned a lot from our loss to Viewmont," coach Jill Avery stated. "We've been playing play-ing sort of tentative. I wanted them to attack, to hit at our opponent and not hesitate. We did that tonight." Woods Cross started game one fast, leading 6-4 before Bountiful ran off five unanswered points to take a 9-6 lead. But with Amy Mason and then Jackie Williams serving, Woods Cross ran off seven straight themselves, leading 13- 9 and seemingly in command. Kim Johnson served a pair of winners, and then Lisa Wilkinson killed two shots to knot the match at 13. Following an exchange of sideouts, Bountiful's Heidi Allen scored a kill to give the Braves a 14- 13 edge. But a moment later, Woods Cross countered with a point to tie things at 14-all. Bountiful turned to Heidi Olsen, who served a winner that Woods Cross knocked into the net. Olsen then served an ace, giving game one to the Braves, 16-14. The Braves jumped out fast in game two, leading 5-2 before Woods Cross stormed back to take an 8-5 lead. Heather Hobbs served for six points, including two aces. Jodie Warhurst, who made her presence pre-sence felt immediately after missing mis-sing preseason, also killed three points in that sequence. But Bountiful regained the lead at 9-8, and the game seesawed back and forth until the teams tied at 13-all. A Brave miss-hit made it 14-13 14-13 for the Wildcats, and then Marci Heaps killed the game-winning point to tie things at one game apiece. The third game was equally exciting. ex-citing. Woods Cross pulled to a 5-2 lead on three straight unforced errors by the Braves. But with Kim Johnson serving, Bountiful ran off five straight points to lead 7-5. The match eventually saw both teams tied at 13 again. Wilkinson slammed home a winner win-ner for Bountiful to make it 14-13, but Woods Cross fought off the match point. With Williams serving, serv-ing, a miss-hit and a kill by Heaps gave the Cats a 15-14 lead, lhis time the Braves fought off match point. A Bountiful block made it 15- all, but Heaps served an ace to give the Wildcats a 16-15 lead. Bountiful made four straight digs to save another match point. Wilkinson Wil-kinson served an ace to tie things at 16. The next point went to Bountiful Bounti-ful on a miss-hit, and the game winner win-ner came when junior Lori Stacey |
