In claiming the region title for the varsity hoys the Darts of Davis piled up 52 points with the Vikings in second with 58. Highland and I'.ast were breathing right down the Vikes necks as both of then, finished with 5l points while Woods Cross had 134. liountil'ul only had two runners compete so they didn't record a team total. Individually Curtis Jones of Hast won the boys title with John Kimball Kim-ball of Davis in second place. Third spot went to Robhy Edwards of the Leopards with Woods Cross ace Darren Tuttlc claiming fourth. Scot Harney of Highland crossed the line fifth just ahead of the first Viking Vik-ing runner Con box. JOK HAWKINS of Davis, Paul Atkinson of Highland. John Pratt of Viewmont, and Tim Davis of Davis rounded out the top ten. All of these runners gained invitations to the state meet this week along with the top three learns. Other Viking runners that scored well were Mike Nelson in llth place. Allan Sorenson in I6lh and L.eland Nez was 19th. DKSPITK NOT winning his fourth straight region title Coach DuBois is still optimistic about his clubs chances in claiming their third straight state crown. "Bonneville "Bonne-ville and Davis would have to be considered the favorites at state but Weber, Highland and us could win also. "All five of our runners have run well this year but never on the same day. it's frustrating as a coach but maybe this Wednesday will be the day they all put it together. Plus Mike Nelson has had a bad cold so this extra week will give him a chance at getting a little stronger which will help." SOPHOMORE Jennifer Johan-sen Johan-sen led the Viking women to victory vic-tory as she took top individual honors hon-ors in a mild upset. "It was an upset up-set to some people but not me. She is just a great kid all around not just in athletics. This past few weeks I could really see her come on so I knew she could win," admitted DuBois. Davis was favored to win the team title but the Vikes took the trophy in relatively easy fashion as they came up 26 points compared to 39 for the Darts. Highland placed third with 83 points followed fol-lowed by East at 85. AMY SESSIONS of Woods Cross, one of the best all season, placed second behind Johansen with Linda Hunter and Cindy Sorenson of the Darts taking the next two spots. Eifth. sixth and seventh place though belonged to the championship champion-ship Viking team as sophomore Melinda McDonald was fifth, senior Kim Ward sixth and junior Kim Trump was seventh. Rounding Round-ing out the top ten were Magan Ause of East, Angie Templcton of Highland and Jennifer Davis of Davis. OTHER members of the championship cham-pionship Viking squad were Sky Mathews. Cindy Trump and Penny Luceo. "Of our top seven runners only one is a senior so we're excited about the future. As for state for the girls Alta is in a league of their own, they could compete with colleges col-leges in this area," DuBois noted, "a couple of weeks ago I wouldn't have said this but right now I think our gals have a good shot at second place along with Hillcrest and Weber. We-ber. Davis could also place high." AS H)R the junior varsity competition com-petition junior Roland Davidson of the Vikes was an easy winner with Geoff Eacer, Ryan Smith, Barry Lord and Mike Hess leading a strong team from Viewmont to the win. The state meet is this Wednesday Wednes-day at Sugarhouse Park with the competition set to begin at 11:30 a.m. Keep in mind the IA goes first, girls then boys, followed by 2A. 3A and finally the 4A event gets underway about 2 p.m. |
