' i "r""" Woods Cross (Sloshed' To Muddy 6-3 Grid Victory Over Bountiful By GARY R. BLODGETT Clipper News Editor . WOODS CROSS Talk about a slippery pigskin. Nothing could have been more elusive than the muddy, snow-soaked gridiron and ball that Bountiful and Woods Cross players had to put up with last Thursday afternoon. THEY DID the best they could under the circumstances, and in the end it was a 6-3 victory for the Wildcats. Much of the gridiron was a sea of mire which made the footing almost impossible and pass receiving receiv-ing even more difficult. Both teams battled back and forth each threatening to score on several occasions but neither team lit up the scoreboard until Matt Bombard kicked a 24-yard field goal to give the Braves a 3-0 lead with 37 seconds remaining in the first half. Bountiful looked like "it was on the roll" in the waning minutes of the half on two long passes from quarterback Joey Covey to Rick Freeman on the Woods Cross 20. Then with fourth down and two, Covey hit Ryan Rushton with a short aerial to the Wildcats 1 1. THREE YARDS AND A BLOB OF MUD CHRIS JACOBS then carried to the five: Covey kept on a sneak to the four, and with third down and short yardage, Bountiful was called cal-led for an illegal shift. An attempted attemp-ted pass was batted down by Mike Chabries, setting up the field goal attempt. Woods Cross' lone score-which . was enough to win the game -came with only about 15 seconds left in the third period. RON GOMEZ, one of the fastest ump m jmhwj mni i. i ii ii jiTmpnij)Ei.imj iiwt wmmm backs in high school football in the state, returned a Bountiful punt from the Wildcats 35 to midfield. After a beautiful pass reception by wide receiver Scott Jensen - who caught it on the 15 and ran to just inside the five - Gomez carried to the two, and Quarterback Todd Smith plunged in for the score. Reserve Trent Sterling picked up a low snap on the attempted conversion con-version and ran to his left to about the 5-yard line where he spotted two would-be receivers all alone in the endzone. He flipped a short, "very soft" pass and hit one receiver re-ceiver right on the muddy letters. BUT THE pass must have surprised sur-prised the intended receiver w ho is still red-faced because he dropped drop-ped the ball like he wasn't supposed sup-posed to have anything to do w ith LUuMi-mJnli iiIum ni"MMnlmr - ti t ; ' ' ' " the muddy oval. Both defensive teams took advantage of the slippery ball and muddy field to recover fumbles and force each team to punt several -times. OFFENSIVELY, Gomez picked up some quick yardage and Chab-ries.
