Show Halloween Tips Motorists, Residents Wteh Out For Little Halloween 'Triek Or Treated By GARY R. BLODGETT Clipper News Editor BOUNTIFUL - There's going to be more than ghosts and goblins haunting the streets of Bountiful next Wednesday night. IT'S HALLOWEEN, and there will be thousands of children many escorted by their parents -walking the streets door-to-door seeking traditional Halloween treats of candy, cookies and other goodies. "And it will be the most dangerous danger-ous night of the year for ail to-pedestrian to-pedestrian accidents." said Bountiful Boun-tiful Police Chief Larry Higgins. "There will be more children -- excited ex-cited by the Halloween spirit on the streets than any other night of the year." KNOWING THIS, Chief Higgins suggests several tips for Halloween seekers -- both children and their parents - and for those accommodating accommo-dating the youngsters in costume. Tips for children include having a responsible adult or teen accompany accom-pany each group of younger children; chil-dren; try to limit the group to not more than five; walk, do not run while trick-or-treating; stay in your own neighborhood and only visit houses which have a porch light turned on: never enter a stranger's house, even if invited; and carry "goodie bags" with handles so that arms can be kept free. ALSO, YOUNGSTERS should wear costumes of a light color or with florescent stripes and do not wear masks. Parents, you too have responsibilities responsi-bilities on Halloween. Most important impor-tant is not to give children candy, cookies or other treats that are not wrapped: leave your porch light on; keep dogs and other pets inside where they will not bother hallo-weeners; hallo-weeners; never invite trick-or-treaters into your home; be certain your children are accompanied by an adult or responsible teen: and do not leave your house unattended. WHILE HELPING your children chil-dren prepare for Halloween, apply a thin coat of cold cream before applying makeup and insist that their costumes be easily seen in the dark. Encourage your older children chil-dren to attend supervised parties keeping in mind that if they are too old to be accompanied w hile trick-or-treating. they are too old to go trick-or-treating. Chief Higgins said there will be a full force of police officers including in-cluding reserve officers -- on duty Halloween night. They will be accompanied by Bountiful Jeep Posse and other law enforcement agencies. CHILDREN carrying jack-o-lanterns are urged to have a flashlight, flash-light, instead of a candle inside, and at least one person in each group should carry a flashlight. . Parents should examine all treats before allowing their children to eat them. If any question. Lake-view Lake-view Hospital will be open from dusk until 10 p.m. to "x-ray" any treats brought to the hospital. "LET'S MAKE this the safest, most enjoyable Halloween ever." said Chief Higgins. |
