J Camper fire causes $10,000 in damage A 1982 Volkswagen camper was gutted by fire on Interstate 80 near Jeremy Ranch Thursday morning, Aug. 1. The driver of the van, Virginia Aldrich of 3711 Eastcliff Dr. in Holladay, said the fire appeared to start in the engine compartment. First on the scene was Jim Bacon, a resident of Silver Creek Estates who works for the Salt Lake County Fire Department. Aldrich said Bacon helped her salvage some possessions from the van and tried to fight the fire with a small, hand-held extinguisher. "He stayed right there until the fire department came," she said. The Park City Fire Depart-Department Depart-Department received the call at 7:16 a.m. and reached the scene at 7:29. By that time the van was fully involved, according to Fire Marshall Sam Coleman. . ; "There are few fires that I've : ; seen where anybody's been able to salvage much," Coleman said. A cause of concern was a small tank of propane for the stove and refrigerator. However, firefighters firefigh-ters managed to keep the tank cool enough to prevent an explosion. The fire ignited the van's . . , magnesium engine block, which ; j burned with a bright white light. i "As far as magnesium goes, i water won't do a thing," said ! volunteer firefighter Gary Vetterli, a deputy with the j Summit County Sheriff's Department. "We used to use them as campfires when I was a kid." Damage to the van was 1 estimated at $10,000. There were no injuries reported. . . |
