Show Over-the-line is the answer I to end-of-season softball blues I for substitutions. Entry fees are $10 per person and cover the cost of T-shirts to be received by all players. The game originated in San Diego, Calif, during the early 1950s. Women are allowed to wear fielder's gloves, men are not. Each team pitches to its own player, who then tries to hit the ball over a line. If the ball lands in front of the line, it's an automatic out. If the ball is hit over the last fielder's head without being touched, it is a home run. If the fielder touches it, it is a base hit. "There are home runs and singles, no doubles or triples," Osher said. "After two base hits, the third is considered a run." The games last five innings, he said. The game is quite popular in San Diego at the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club, where an annual tournament spans three weeks and involves some 300 teams, Osher said. Registration forms are available at the Park City Recreation Department in the Memorial Building. For information call 649-9461. 649-9461. The games start at 9 a.m. Saturday and three games will be played simultaneously. Those lamenting the coming close of the softball season can participate in an unusual twist on the game this weekend's Over-the-Line tournament. About 20 spots still were available on the 32-team roster and Park City Recreation Department Mike Osher said once the lineup is filled, no more teams will be accepted. "If you lose out, I don't want to hear any complaints," he said. The two-day tournament at the high school field will feature three-person three-person teams, one member of which must be female . The teams can have two additional players on the bench |
