Show Cow Pie Classic promises more than sides of beef It sounds more like a convention of dairy farmers than a rugby tournament. tourna-ment. But the Cow Pie Classic in Steamboat Springs, Colo, this weekend promises some of the toughest competition the Park City Muckers will have faced all season. The Muckers' competition in the tournament will be seven Colorado teams, including three from the Denver area, which boasts some of the toughest rugby in the country. One of the favorites is the Raleigh Hills All Stars, a team that includes several members of the Denver Barbarians, runner-up in the national nation-al club side competition this year. "I look forward to playing them," said Doug Shewmaker, president of the Muckers. "Your quality of play improves as your opponents improve." im-prove." Also enrolled in the tournament are two other Denver-area teams, the Harlequins and Queen City, as well as teams from Fort Collins, Durango, Steamboat Springs and Breckenridge. Park City fans may recall the Muckers lost 9-3 to Breckenridge in the first round of the Ski Town Tournament in July. "That will be a good rematch if we play them," Shewmaker said. At this writing the Muckers do not know who their opponents will be. However, each team is scheduled to play three matches, two Saturday and one Sunday. The two teams undefeated after Saturday's matches will meet for the championship. The Muckers are still trying to replace fly half Martin Corps, out for the season after separating a shoulder during the Ski Town Tournament. Paul lamphier is also on the sidelines with a leg injury. However, two other players, Rich Phaler and Steve O'Day, are expected to return to the team this week. Next on the Mucker schedule is a trip to Craig, Colo. Aug. 24. The figures aren't in yet, but Shewmaker indicated the Muckers' food beverage booth at the Park City Art Festival last weekend was apparently a roaring success. "I want to thank everybody for their support," he said. |
