Show Shark-wary triath I etes to Dash for Cash Saturday by NAN CHALAT Record staff writer It is Richard Barnum-Reece's contention that entering a triathlon triath-lon should not require a major savings account withdrawal just to scrape together enough for the entry fee. Nor does he think it amusing that race participants are expected to smile while said hard-earned entry fee gets divided up between the same three winners every race. Why not let the little people partake in the winnings too? Thus, Robin Hood Reece, who is editor and publisher of the monthly journal, The Wasatch Runner, created the Dash for Cash, which is slated for this Saturday at 7 a.m. The entry fee is $15 (compared to $25 or $30 for most local triathlons). "It's the cheapest triathlon in the west," Barnum-Reece contends. con-tends. And, in addition to a beefy prize list donated by race sponsors, the winnings include $500 in random awards, he said. The race is not only moderate in price the course requirements require-ments are relatively mild too. The course includes a 13-mile bike ride, a three-mile run and a l10th-mile swim. "It is designed for people who believe every body of water is inhabited by sharks," Bamum-Reece Bamum-Reece said. The entire race, from the Park City High School to Rockport Reservoir, should be run in under an hour, he added. Last year, 55 entrants turned out for the first annual Dash for Cash. And, except for a few well-known local triathletes Bar-num-Reece refers to as "those androids" he said the event mostly attracted people who were competing for fun rather than glory. Those who wish to participate in this year's Dash for Cash should be at the entrance to the Park City High School at 7 a.m. Saturday. From there, racers will cycle out of town on Hwy. 248 to Hwy. 40 and then over Brown's Pass (Rte 189) to Rockport State Park. At the entrance to the park, racers will dismount their bicycles and run three miles to the boat ramp. From there they will dive into the reservoir ("Where the sharks are waiting," Reece said) and swim l10th mile around the buoy. Prizes will be awarded immediately following the race south of the dock, he said. Support crews are suggested and Barnum-Reece warns that there will be no changing tents.
