MOVIES The U.S. Film Festival presents a huge banquet of independent films, foreign movies, premiers, and salutes to Francois Truffaut, Roger Corman and Ivan Passer. (See articles in this section. ) The Salt Lake City library continues with its series "The Feminine Touch French Style" with Agnes Varda's "Lions Love." The film, presented on Thursday, Jan. 17, is a free-form, nostalgic trip back to the culture and music of the '60s. Tickets are $17.50 for the series, $2.50 for each film. It plays 7 p.m. at the library, 209 East 500 South. This week's Miss Marple film also plays at the city library. In "Murder Most Foul" Margaret Rutherford as Marple seeks to prove the ' defendant in a murder case (in which she sits on the jury) is innocent. It ; plays Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. (for 25 cents) and 7 p.m. (for 50 cents). ;' At the Blue Mouse: In "Man Who Fell To Earth" David Bowie' plays an alien whose mission to save his home planet is distracted. For' the rest' of the week, the Mouse features a Charlie Chaplin festival.,. The Little tramp ventures through the Depression in "Modern Times"; . he is mistaken for a Hitler type in "The Great Dictator"; searches for Yukon riches in the classic "Gold Rush"; and befriends little Jackie . Coogan in "The Kid." The feast of great comedy is rounded out by Chaplin shorts like "The Cure" and "The Immigrant." The Mouse is at . 260 East 100 South. , The comedy continues at the Utah Media Center. In.' "Horsefeathers" Groucho Marx is the college president who sings' "Whatever it is, I'm against it." The Marx Brothers also wreak havoc at a football game and visit a speakeasy where the password is "Swordfish." It plays on Jan. 18 (7:30), 19 (5:30 and 9:30) and 20 (7:30 p.m.). The co-feature, "And Now for Something Completely Different," is a 90-minute compilation of their TV sketches, but Monty Python freaks won't mind. It plays on Friday, Jan. 18 (7:30 and 9:30) and 20 (5:30 and 9:30 p.m.). The films are shown in the auditorium of the Salt Lake Art Center, at 20 South West Temple. The city library presents "Dreams on Film: The Surrealistic Side of Utah Indendent Filmmakers" on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. Utah artists featured are Michael Nash, Larry Roberts and Margaret Varra. MUSIC The Utah Symphony presents a concert under guest conductor Gunther Schuller, with the music of DvoraK, Schuller, Ravel and Scott Joplin. It will be presented on Jan. 17 (8 p.m. ) at the Browning Center of Ogden's Weber State College. It will also be presented at Symphony Hall (123 West South Temple) on Jan 17 -(11 a.m.), 18 and 19 (at 8 p.m.). The Zephyr, 301 South West Temple, presents pelbert McClinton ; - jlon Jan. , tlie . Dowd and his giant rabbit friend "Harvey" at the Pioneer Memorial Theatre on the U. of U. campus. The production plays nightly, except Sundays, through Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. A matinee on Jan. 19 is at 2 p.m. ETCETERA The Kimball Art Center hosts exhibits by watercolorist Dawna Barton, printmaker Brooke Morrison, Morri-son, sculptor Clayton Robbins and photographer Sandria Miller. The exhibit runs through Jan. 31. The University of Utah Women's Gymnastics team faces Oregon State at the Special Events Center on Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Center and Datatix outlets. In Salt Palace sports, the Eagles hockey team skates against Fort Wayne on Jan. 17 and Muskeeon on Jan. 21 and 23. The Jazz play Portland on Jan. 18 and New Jersey on Jan. 22. The Fantasy Travel Show, Jan. 17-19 at the Salt Palace Exhibition Hall, features exhibits and films of faraway places, and gives away several vacation prizes. On Jan. 19 the Palace will feature the Miss Drill Team competition in the arena. |
