Show Seminars feature filmmakers in flesh The films are on the screen. But much of the fun at the U.S. film Festival to be held here Jan.-19-27 is meeting the people who make the films. You'll have a chance to do this with six seminars scheduled for the festival. The seminar "Stars on a Budget" on Jan. 20 will feature Patrick Duffy of the television series "Dallas." It will ask the question, why do major industry stars work on independent films? Duffy appears with Frederick Keller, director of his film "Vamping." Film actor Nick Mancuso appears with Bobby Roth, director of his movie "Heartbreakers." Also scheduled for the discussion is agent Joan Scott, from the Writer and Artists organization. The seminar is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. at the Elks Building. Producer-director Roger Corman, king of the crazy B movies, will appear with Paul Bartel (who directed "Death Race 2000" and acted in "Rock 'n' Roll High School" for Corman), Jonathan Demme (director of "Melvin and Howard" and "Swing Shift") and Joe Dante (director of "The Howling" and "Gremlins" ). The seminar is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festival's opening weekend will feature a discussion on directing comedy and drama. Two sessions are scheduled on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. Michael Dinner will discuss comedy directing and Bobby Roth will discuss filming drama. Other seminars include the following: "What's Real".'" examines documentary, with veteran filmmakers Frederick Wiseman, D.A. Pennebaker, Barbara Kopple and Robert Epstein (director of "Times of Harvey. Milk"). It will take place on Friday, Jan. 25 from 3 to 5 p.m. V Dilemmas of Finance" will take place onWednesday, Jan 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. "Finding the Audience" a discussion of marketing techniques, takes place on Thursday, Jan. 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. Except for the directing seminars, admission to each seminar is $15. All discussions will be held in the Egyptian Theatre, excpet for "Stars on a Budget." |
