Show Decisions by forfeit mark wrestling clash with South Rich 'V ....... 1 Q: Who makes the decisions when Park City meets South Rich in wrestling? A: Forfeit does. Seven of nine scheduled "matches were decided by forfeit Jan. 10 when the Park City Miners met the South Rich Trojans in a three-way wrestling meet at North Summit High School. The culprit, according to Park City Coach Jess Schaub, is the size of the wrestling programs at the two schools. South Rich only brought four wrestlers to meet, Schaub said, and one of those was injured. That left three, and one of those was in a weight class (138 pounds) in which Park City didn't have a wrestler. Mark up one forfeit for South Rich. That left two Trojan wrestlers with Park City opponents. At 126 pounds it was the battle of the Mikes, with Park City's Mike Birch against South Rich's Mike Hopkin. Actually, it wasn't much of a battle. It lasted only one minute and J5( seqonds, with Mike .Birch moving in for a quick pin." "' 1 But the other match went the distance, as Park City 132-pounder Ocey Leavitt lost a 6-5 decision to Alan Hackford of the Trojans. ' The way Schaub told it, Hackford is a tall, lanky wrestler who made good use of his long limbs to tie Leavitt up in knots. Leavitt was ahead 5-4 at the end of the first period, but lost the match when Hackford picked up a reversal in the second period. The team score (thanks mainly to the forfeits) was a lopsided 42-9 in favor of the Miners. The score after Park City's clash with North Summit was also lopsided, but this time the Miners were on the short end, 12-49. Here again forfeit carried a big stick, giving the Braves 24 of their 49 points on forfeits in four weight classes. Of the eight matches which did take place, Park City won three: At 112 pounds, Greg Reed picked up two near falls in the second period on his way to a 13-7 win over Shawn Ortega. At 126 pounds, Mike Birch led Matt Burnett Stu Ovard 9-8 after two periods to insure the win, 11-8. Schaub said he was watching closely to see whether Birch ran out of gas late in the match. "It was the first time that Mike got to the third period all season," he Said. "He was really in pretty good condition." At 132 pounds, Ocey Leavitt won by a pin over Theron Anderson with 30 seconds left in the second period. Park City's losses came at 98 pounds, where Chad Zierenberg was pinned by Kirk Orgill early in the match; at 105 pounds, where Rob Bassett was outpointed 12-0; at 119 pounds where Matt Burnett lost 2-1 to Mike Pace; at 155 pounds, where Steve Jacobson lost 18-4 to Jeff Anderson; and at 167 where Brent Adams was "pinned by Russell Robins with two seconds left in the second period. Schaub said Burnett's narrow loss came on a disputed near fall awarded to his opponent during the second period. "That was probably the most exciting match of the night." In exhibition matches against North Summit, Park City won two and lost three. The schedule now calls for the Miners to host North Summit and South Summit Thursday at 6 p.m. in the high school gym. |
