Show Stars shine on and off the court at Garvey tennis classic by Teri Gomes Last weekend the theme was love as All-Star first baseman for the San Diego Padres Steve Garvey hosted the second annual Garvey Celebrity Tennis and Ski Classic. The event will benefit the 1985 International iV inter Special Olympics Games to be held in Park City March 24-29. Tennis commissioner for the two-day event was Rod Laver, the only man ever to win the Grand Slam of tennis twice. Ski commissioner commis-sioner was Norwegian-born Olympic gold medal winner and director of skiing for Deer Valley resort. Stein Eriksen. Saturday activities at the Park Meadows Country Club featured celebrities taking turns in the stands and on the court. Christopher Atkins of "Dallas" and the film "The Blue Lagoon" was on hand to win a set with partner Rod Laver against veteran actor Michael Dante and Stein Eriksen. Winners in the gold division in Saturday's competition were Atkins and partner Bob Devitt of Marketing Specialists Inc. of Salt Lake. Silver-division winners were Dante and his partner Bob Maxfield, also of Marketing Specialists Inc. On Sunday the festivities moved to the slopes of Deer Valley Resort, where races between celebrities were highlighted by an ohstacle course. The Special Olympics Games were organized in '60s by the Joseph Kennedy Foundation. Initially the program included only summer Games for mentally retarded competitors com-petitors over the age eight. The first winter Games were held in 1977 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The March Games in Park City will be the third International Winter Special Olympics Games.
