Show O: Tm 9(CIlaDIk : WDnnsM V ,-, , by David Fleisher Strong language, strange plots: a film festival preview Every year I look forward to the U.S. Film Festival in ParkTQty.Th yearS past I tended to hop from' one movie'to' 1 tefioSPJf xX!fj10jSfic,et1y',i 'n acvance which ones ' I wanted to see; nowever, t discovered f rVrKseamo'vie9 that turned out to be very good. I'm not going to let that happen this year. I got a copy of the film guide over the weekend, and my roommate, Mike Phillips, and I reviewed the list of movies, both in the dramatic and documentary categories, and tried to decide what films to see over the next 10 days. Based on the actual titles of the films, Mike and I attempted to speculate on what they may be about. The festival kicks off Friday night with a premiere of The Falcon and the Snowman starring Frank Bell, undercover agent for the Park City Police Department. Suave and debonair, but with nerves of steel, Frank Bell, nicknamed "The Falcon," manages to single-handedly apprehend the dreaded Snowman. The Snowman has set up a drug-smuggling operation in the Soap Opera laundromat by stuffing soap dispensers with bogus boxes of Tide filled with cocaine. Adult language, violence, nudity. Paris, Texas is based on the book entitled, Provo, Utah, which consists of 200 blank pages. The two-hour film stars no one in particular and has no plot. Parts of it are rather slow moving, however the movie doesTiaVe a surprise ending, and that's when the usher wakes you up and tells you it's over. Jlnding An Audience: This film has the unique distinction of being so bad that the filmmaker, literally, travels around the world in pursuit of an audience to watch it. A Flash of Green : This is a science fiction film about a perverted Martian who, following an accident in space, finds himself stranded in Los Angeles. As a way of attracting attention, the Martian unzips his space suit and exposes himself during rush hour on the Santa Monica freeway. Frequent nudity. Parental discretion is advised. the Brother From Another Planet: This touching drama focuses on an interstellar traveler's relentless search for his long-lost brother. The story comes to a sad conclusion when he leams his brother was arrested by the California Highway Patrol for indecent exposure on the Santa Monica freeway, and is serving 10 to 20 years in the state mental hospital for insisting he's a Martian. Bed and Board: This bittersweet tale tells the story of three lonely guys who prowl the bars of Park City looking for bed and board for the night ... for a week ... or will it be forever? Don't miss this sensitive drama of unfulfilled lust. Adult language, and unfortunately, no nudity. Lust in the Dust: a sequel to Bed and Board. Our three "'lonely guys finaUy hit pay dirt. Adult situations, strong -language and nudity: Recommended for lonely guys " 'everywhere U, J,, iue nmiyuaiut Mosquito on the Tenth Floor: a chilling and revealing film about the darker side of society, dealing with prejudice, intolerance and bigotry. The plot revolves around a mosquito, named Harry, who rents an apartment in Chicago. After neighborhood thugs break all six of Harry's kneecaps, calling him flyface and bloodsucker, he commits suicide when he takes an overdose of Raid. Rated R for ridiculous, the movie contains some nudity with fleeting shots of Harry taking a shower. Not for Publication: This provocative film is about two young, aggressive reporters who go to work for a small newspaper in a Western ski resort. The reporters get themselves in trouble when they write scathing articles about the very lifeblood of the community tourism. The articles inflame the local residents, and provoke fights in bars. The story reaches the inevitable climax when the reporters come face to face with the crusty publisher of the newspaper, nicknamed "Blood and Guts," played by Clint Eastwood. As punishment for their crimes, the reporters are forced to write "Not for Publication" one thousand times on the blackboard in the newsroom. This is a must see. Adult theme and situations, graphic violence, strong language and nudity. Mother's Meat and Freud's Flesh: This somewhat unbelievable film centers on an immigrant couple from Albania who come to Park City and open an Iranian delicatessen and health food store. The plot thickens after several local residents die off from food poisoning. Are the deaths intentional or accidental? Are the Albanians guilty or innocent? As one noted New York critic wrote recently, "Who cares?" Rated D for disgusting. Almost You: The working title for this film was Completely Me before it was changed to Almost You. This disturbing documentary is an expose on EST. The six-hour investigative report is a biography of Wemer Erhardt, founder of EST. Mr. Erhardt shares not only his space, but also his probing insights into humanity for six hours on the screen without taking even one breath of air. The shocking conclusion screams across the screen when we learn that Mr. Erhardt is, in fact, the brother from another planet. The film ends with the words, "Thank you for sharing that with me!" . As I walk up Main Street I hear the Ten O'clock Whistle. |
