Show WWi . I ! I V Kate Soffel (Diane Keaton) lies stunned after having been caught in a violent outbreak between the prison guards and the Biddle brothers in "Mrs. Soffel," a romantic drama. Keaton, Allen will highlight premiere Woody Allen and Diane Keaton will contribute their talents to the United States Film Festival but not in the same film. In fact, Allen won't even be onscreen. They're both part of a series of four premiere films scheduled to play at Main Street's Egyptian Theatre d'-ring the festival, to be held in Park City Jan. 19-27. Keaton stars in the title role of "Mrs. Soffel" playing Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. The film is based on a true incident. At the turn of the century, condemned killer Ed Biddle (Mel Gibson) and his brother (Matthew Modine) escaped from the Allegheny County Jail. The area was scandalized since the Biddies were aided by Katherine Soffel (Diane Keaton), mother of four and wife of the warden. The film is directed by Australian Gilliam Armstrong ("My Brilliant Career") and co-stars Edward Herrman as Warden Soffel. On Sunday, Jan. 20, the festival will present "Paris, Texas," directed by German Wim Wenders and written by Sam Shepard. Harry Dean Stanton plays a man who wanders into a small Texas town after being missing for four years. Gathering his brother (Dean Stockwell) and son Hunter Carson ), the stranger sets out to find his wife (Nastassja Kinski). From that simple thread, the filmmakers have woven a highly-acclaimed story of love, communication and self -discovery. "Mass Appeal," shown on Friday, Jan. 25, stars Jack Lemmon as a folksy, popular but superficial priest. Zeljko Ivanek plays a younger, idealistic priest who jars Lemmon into remembering tne reasons for his spiritual commitment. The film is directed by Glenn Jordan. The final premiere is Woody Allen's "Purple Rose of Cairo." Little is known about the film, except that the . "Purple Rose" is a 1936 movie playing at a small-town theater called the Jewel. Mia Farrow plays an innocent waitress with dreams, and is joined by Jeff Daniels, Edward Herrman and Van Johnson. It will paly on Jan. |
