High School lockers by Nan Chalat Two sophomores at Park City High School have beeri, suspended from ' school for possession of a controlled substance on campus. Marijuana was found in two lockers at the high school Friday. Both students, a boy and a girl, admitted ownership of the substance and are on , indefinite , suspension, High School Principal Jack Dozier told the Record. The marijuana was discovered during a locker search authorized by Acting Principal Hal Smith and witnessed by a member of the High School Student Council. The search was instigated by reports of a marijuana-like odor around the lockers. The evidence was turned over to the Park City Police Department. The two students were referred to juvenile court and . ji... released into their parents' custody. According to school district policy, the principal can suspend a student for up to 10 days. The . school superintendent can authorize a suspension of up to 30 days. Expulsion requires a vote by the Board of Education. Dozier said lie will refer this case to the school board for a decision. "I have very strong feelings about this," said Dozier. "I believe that a student using alcohol or a controlled substance is in no way able to derive the full benefit of his education. School superintendent Tony Mitchell Mit-chell reinforced Dozier's statement. "We have to give a clear statement to all students this will not be tolerated, that this is not the kind of situation where we will give a student three or even two chances," Mitchell said. Dozier said the recent drug bust comes on the heels of two faculty ' meetings where' teachers1 said they ' perceived druifuse'tfas increasing at school, said Dozier. "For two to three years now we have had a very clean campus and we will not allow drugs to become the problem they were in 1978-80." |
