Show Smith and Brim general store to be recreated in museum M-r '$ -v ' r' ( . 1 ) byNanChalat When Ed and Roslyn Grose bought the Park City Mercantile building on Main Street in 1963 -they couldn't afford new fixtures. "So we used the ones which were already there," said Roslyn. They found that the building, which had been the site of the Smith and Brim general store until 1915, had a rich history. Before long the Groses were searching for more of its origianl artifacts. , Their efforts were rewarded when they found the original cheese cutter, the coffee grinder, one of the display cases and many decorative tins which once adorned adorn-ed the store. The Groses carefully cataloged and stored each piece. When they left Park city they used the collection to recreate an old general store in the historic Heber Creeper village in Heber. The Main Street building they sold later became Park Place International. But Roslyn Grose said her dream always had been to reassemble the store in Park City. Her dream will come true this spring. The Park City Museum has contracted Rosyln Grose to create a new exhibit. Grose proposed setting up a small store just like the Smith and Brim in 1915. Her proposal was accepted Tuesday. The exhibit will be set up in the northwest corner of the museum across from the miner's kitchen which Grose also designed and spent nearly 300 volunteer hours constructing. The kitchen exhibit depicts a typical miner's kitchen on a laundry day in 1910. The general store exhibit will take a lot of work, she said. She has set a tentative opening date for May which will be accompanied accompa-nied by a party and fundraiser for the museum. " |
