Show Kamas highway realignment affects P. C. .-, Editor: I don't know if the business people of Park City are aware of the controversy going on between Wasatch County and Kamas valley residents in regard to the realignment realign-ment of the highway out the Kamas valley. It is a controversy that very much affects the Park City area and I am surprised that the people of Park City are not concerned. As you are aware, Park City is a place that Kamas valley people go to shop, eat, and indulge. The planned hospital at Kimball Junction is another factor that the Kamas valley residents are concerned concern-ed about with the realignment. The Utah Department of Trans portation has presented information on two proposed routes out of Kamas. One route, known as the south route, would put the road on the south side of the proposed Jordanelle reservior. This would put the interchange for highway 189 and 40 south of the Jordanelle Dam at the Midway highway. The other proposed propos-ed route would run west from 200 south Main in Kamas and continue through the west hills to highway 40 where an interchange would be established at about the Browns Canyon Road. The interchage at this location would benefit Park City as much as Kamas Valley residents. In two independent studies, one by the U.D.O.T. and one by myself, it was found that in the U.D.O.T. study, 22 percent of traffic turned toward Heber and 78 percent turned toward Park City and Salt Lake. My study showed 20 percent Heber and 80 percent Park City Salt Lake. It should be noted that Wasatch Co. has mounted a campaign to get the south route approved. They have banded together doctors, the Wasatch Wa-satch Co. hospital and all of the Heber City storeowners and have flooded U.D.O.T. with calls and letters in favor of the south route, south route. I think the Park City business people should be made aware of the situation and become involved. After all, Kamas Valley residents spend a lot of money in Park City and contribute greatly to its work force. I urge all interested parties to write or call the Utah Department of Transportation as listed below. Blaine Kay or Alfred Olschewski Utah Dept. of Transportation 4501 South 2700 West Salt Lake City, Utah 84119 or phone 965-4025. Many Thanks, Charles Hebden Kamas City Councilman |
