Show UPA General Excellence award goes to the Park Record i For the second consecutive year, the Park Record has been given the Utah Press Association's Associa-tion's General Excellence award for Group ILT (large circulation) weekly newspapers. The 1984 award, which is based on a number of criteria including news and editorial writing, photography, advertising and page design, was announced Saturday at the association's annual winter convention in Provo. The General Excellence awards for the smaller papers went to the Manti Messenger in Group I (up to 1,900 circulation) and to the American Fork Citizen in Group II (1,901 to 3,499). Group III represents weekly papers with circulations of 3,500 and above. The Park Record, one of 22 Group III weeklies in the Utah Press Association, also received the following individual awards: First place in the Best News Series category for Christopher Smart's coverage of the Prospector Pros-pector tailings investigation. First place in the Best Special Section category for the Park City Art Festival supplement. supple-ment. First place in the Best Front Page category for overall content and design (of three randomly-selected randomly-selected issues). Second place in Best Editorial Edi-torial for Christopher Smart's entry on the medja coverage of the Prospector investigation. Second place in Best Feature Story for David Hampshire's article on closing day at Art's Hardware. Third place in the Best Column category for Nan Chalat's "Mountain Seasons." Third place in Best Sports Section (based on three randomly-selected issues). "We're' very happy to have received the (General Excellence) award for the second time," Record Publisher Jan Wilking said later. "This is an indication of the hard work and dedication of all the members of the staff." Wilking also argued that the paper is a reflection of its environment. "Park City is the kind of community that demands a quality paper. Our efforts to meet the needs of the community have driven us to provide that quality." Runner-up to the Park Record in the Group III General ! Excellence category was the Price ' Sun Advocate. Third place went to the Uintah Basin Standard.
