Show a second-hand hand-me-down coat never fit very well. Better be a natural fool than an artificial one. We cannot have too much real refinement; but good breeding and true culture need no label and the fact is that the more refined people are simple and unaffected in their ways. It h only the climbers, the newly-arrived, that feel it necessary to put on studied and showy manners in order to announce themselves. AFFECTED MANNERISMS. . -Some of our newspapers and society people are taking on the , affectation of using as much English-English as possible. For some reason which no one has even been able to state, it is considered "smart" (in the English sense) to use in this country phrases which the "cult-yuh'd klosses" of England are supposed to use. For example, ex-ample, we hear more and more frequently the expression: such and such a person lives "in" such and such a street. The Washington papers use this expression in their everyday news item. And yet nobody no-body except in England, lives "in" a street. In this country we live "on" a street, but never "in" it unless we are renters and haven't paid our rent and the landlord has evicted us and even then we are not "in" it long, for the police will make us move on. Why do people want to be so affected? They ought to know that they are making "silly osses" of themselves to employ a favorite Anglicism. They fool no one, except possibly themselves.
