Bliss has assumed as-sumed formal command of the depart ment of California, oucceedlug Majrr General Thomas II. Bliss, will arrLe In Washington next Thursday Thurs-day on bis way to West Point to become be-come superiutendent of the military academy. This will be the first time In more than u quarter of a century that the academy has been headed bv a major general. From 1S76 to 1881 Major General Scnflchl was superintendent superin-tendent of the academy. From 18S1 to 1882 Bn'gadler General O. II, Howard, How-ard, appointed as a brevet major general, gen-eral, wus at the school . These arc the only two Instances In which officers offi-cers of high rank havo been on duty at the school. |
