Notwithstanding the stringent measures taken by the authorities, a i majority of the negro population Is defiant, de-fiant, and there is apparently no abatement abate-ment of assaults against white women. NEGROES STILL UGLY They Defy Authority and There Is no Abatement of Assaults Pittsburg, Feb. 8 Many persons gathered In the vicinity of the cast end police station this morning, believing believ-ing that James Dickson, a negro arrested ar-rested Saturday night for insulting a white woman and who narrowly escaped es-caped being lynched by an infuriated crowd, would be given a hearing. " Owing Ow-ing to the inability of the young woman wo-man to appear against the negro until tomorrow, the case was postponed. When an attempt was made Saturday Satur-day night bv a plain clothes officer to tjrest Dickson, the negro- knocked the Mncer down and fought so desperately desperate-ly that, the policeman's clothes were almost torn off. The fight attracted large crowd which became threatening threaten-ing when it was learned that Dickjou had insulted a white woman.
