Show BRIDGES WASHED OUT Arroyo Seco Is a Raging Torrent Carrying With it Destruction Los Angeles, Feb. S. Running at I flood tides, its angry waves foam-capped and swirling from bank to bank, the Arroyo Seco, fed by heavy rain3 from mountains and foothills, Is grlnd-I grlnd-I lng Its path to the sea, tearing away all obstructions In its course. Four bridges, numberless fences, outhouses and buildings, a dozen bulkheads and heavy mattresses have been taken as toll by the stream that but a day or two ago was a purling brook. The main line and Glendalo branch bridges on the Salt Lake route, the big steel and concrete bridge on the main line of the Santa Fe and the Pasadena avenue bridge of the Pacific Electric lino were washed out last night, although al-though the latter, held by Its cantilever canti-lever trusses, Is still passable for light cars. On the city bridges at Avenues 26 and 43, and the big bridge at Pasadena avenue, danger signals are posted to prevent vehicles passing over. The big Santa Fo bridge at Avenue 35 sank beneath its own weight and sagged In the center fully eighteen Inches, making it dangerous for the passage of trains. This resulted In the holding up of the Overland Limited outside of the city and tho transferring of its passengers to town by street cars and automobiles. From almost the headwaters of the arroyo, damage and destruction marked mark-ed the flood. Outhouses and buildings, barns, fences and vehlclos on or near the banks of the creek were caught and whirled away. The banks were washed awar In many places for as much as thirty feet and the arroyo changed Us channel completely In two places between Avenue 43 and Its mouth. |
