Tho fnlal 'j' trials will begin Juno 3, and will bo sailed In Block Jsland Sound, off -: Nowport. Tho schedule for theso races as announced by tho N. Y. Y. I C. Is as follows: I Juno 3, 4, C. 7, S, 9,. 10, 11, 13, 14, h 1G. 1C, 17, IS, and 19. I The rival yachts arc now harbored X a.t Morris Cove, noar New Haven, Or tho tunlntr un trials. Both linvn I been undergoing alterations looking toward greater speed and better stability sta-bility In tho water. Tho long interval vk between the calling off of the last & International race and the porfec-q porfec-q Uon of plans to resume the classic j ' event this year gave American r jachtamcn an opportunity to lm-prove lm-prove on tho construction of racing j achts, and both the Vanltlo und P Resolute have been greatly improved. Following the tuning up trials this month tho American sloopH will ba put In shipshape for tho official trials during tho Interval of a week between May 27 and June 3. Both iachts havo been sailed in Long Island Sound this spring, and from all reports each behaved satisfactorily. satisfac-torily. Of tho trio Vanitle, Resolute and Shamrock IV. Vanltlo is said to be the best all-weather boat. When the Vanitle and Rccoluto last met the former yacht dried out with a sponge while the Rcsoluto had to be balled out. Yet as far back as 1911 both yachts broke records for tho course,' the Resoluto making slightly the best showing, according to a majority ma-jority of export yachtmen. And now, with their rigs improved, tho rivals are expected to behave wonderfully well In any kind of weather. Both yachts havo taller rigs than they had In 1914 and booms about two feet shorter, Longer gaffs, which give them a somewhat changed appearance, ap-pearance, have also boon installed. Vanltle's boom Ib 79 feet long and her gaff lo 6 4 feet. Above this gaff will stretch her big club topsail. Vanltic'n one big fault In 1914 was her steering gear, but this fault has boon corrected. , Tho cutting off of her rail from amidships aft and the Installation of a new deck made her between S00 and 900 pounds lighter. In order to balanco this more lead was added to her keel, and the lowering low-ering of this great woifrht has riven her better balance. Extra spars for both tho Vanltlo and Resolute have been made In order or-der that no delay may bo caused In case of breakage. Th challenger, Shamrock IV., Is practically ready for her tost spins-wlth spins-wlth tho 23-metre Shamrock, which sailed from England recently for this country. Upton's boat, according accord-ing to reports, will carry about 1.-300 1.-300 more square feet of sail than either of the American yachts. Shamrock will spread about 10,600 square feet of canvas, Resolute 9,-100 9,-100 and Vanitle 9.300. Tho Reliance, the last cup defender, spread about 1C.O00 feet, but she was a much larger yacht, having a 90-foot water-line, water-line, whoro the prosent yachts boast only 70 foot. The differonce In the expanse of pail is the chief reason why tho challenger chal-lenger will glvo tho defonder a handicap. handi-cap. It Is oxpocted that this handicap handi-cap will bo approximately 6 minutes. |
