Show oo Man o' War Sets New Record for Mile Race NEW YORK, May 2S. A world's record for a one mile horse race around turns was made today by the three-year-old Man O'War, winner of the 1919 futurity, in cov.erlng the distance dis-tance in the Wither stake at Belmont park In one minute 35 3-5 seconds. ThG former record 136 15 was made in August 191S, by Sunbrlar at Saratoga, N. Y., and equally a year later by Fairy Wand on the same track. Man O'War, by Fair Play-Mahuba, set a terrific pace from the Btart and finished under a hard pull, two lengths in front of Wildalr, which won the Metropolitan handicap last Monday. The winner was ridden by Jockey Kummer whose efforts to "keep his "horse under restraint were unavailing throughout the race. The three horses in the race, including in-cluding David Harum, which was fif-ten fif-ten lengths behind Wildalr, carried 118 pounds. Man O'War's times at each quarter were given as 24; 47 1-5; 1:11 - and l: 35 4-5. |
