Show I CIGARETTES FOR fflffi BOYS OF THIS CITY Members of tho board of city commissioners com-missioners administered a blow to youthful cigarette smokers and tobacco tobac-co chewers at their regular meeting this morning by passing a stringent anti-clgaretto ordinance. The ordinance was prepared by Eja-vid Eja-vid L. Stine, assistant city attorney, at the instance of Commissioner M. L. Jones of the public safety department. It makes it an offense for a person under 21 years of age to have cigarettes, ciga-rettes, tobacco or narcotics of any character in his possession. It also provides a penalty for a youth to misrepresent mis-represent his ago in order to procure tobacco. "The ordinance is compliance with the state law which prohibits the uso of cigarettes or tobacco of any kind by minors." said Commissioner Jones. "The boys of the city also have acquired ac-quired a custom of imposing upon tne tobacco dealers by misrepresenting their ages. The ordinance covers that feature by making It a misdemeanor for misrepresenting his age." Under the state law, tho dealer is expected to take no chances. If a minor mi-nor misrepresents his ago and procures pro-cures tho tobacco or cigarettes, the seller is equally guilty as If he had not inquired as to the age of the purchaser. purchas-er. The city ordinance protects the dealer to an extent at least by making the boy guilty and liable to a fine and imprisonment for imposing upon tho dealer. The ordiuanco received the unanimous approval of the board of commissioners. i |
