Show I; SERGEANT WALSH OF i M TOUL, FRANCE. I When tho Germans made a raid on I 'the American lines in the Toul sector, Sergeant Walsh, 47 years of age, dis- ; tinguished himself and was awarded j the "Cross of War" by the French. ! Yesterday Secretary of War Baker, ; i 'who is in France, telegraphed to Toul, requesting that Sergeant Walsh be nl- ' lowed to act aa his orderly. We take It that Sergeant Walsh has i "been one of our regular soldiers for a I .number of years, having been in serv- ' h i ice long enough to get well beyond the k age of enlistment. He must have seen ' r service in the Philippines and down on l the border. Perhaps he was with t 'Pershing In the long hike into Mexico. i Whatever his past, he has been suddenly sud-denly lifted from obscurity and made ; a national hero, i His honors will inspire emulation. Before this war is over, thousands' of ( ; American boys will be decorated, if :. ; j -daring and bravery are the tests of j " fitness. ; Already in France the American ' .spirit is asserting itself. During the ; j Efirst few days of American occupation , of the trenches north of Toul, the Ger- ' i : mans displayed contempt for the new- .comers and proceeded to organize i ! raids. Within the week our boys have retaliated with such good effect, that on Monday and Tuesday the men who went over the top penetrated to the second line of German defense. Before this summer has ended there will be less German brag and boast as to what they will do to the Americans. Ameri-cans. We are quite convinced that in quick thinking, dash, courage, resourcefulness resourceful-ness the Americans will prove superior super-ior to the Germans, who are well officered, of-ficered, but, individually, are inferior to our troops in everything that goes to make a soldier. |
