German and Austro-Hungarlan troops arc now before Odessa, the war office announces. The preliminary peace treaty signed sign-ed by Rumania and the central powers on March 5 contained, a provision engaging en-gaging Rumania to support with all its strength the transport of- troops of the central powers through Moldavia and Bessarabia lo Odessa. Tho purpose pur-pose of the central powers in inserting insert-ing this clause has not been made clear, although the explanation was given that the primary object was to secure the Importation of supplies from the Ukraine. After the treaty was signed the semi-official German news agency said that Germany had acquired a direct route by way of Russia to Persia and Afghanistan. Littlo news has been received for the last fortnight of military operations opera-tions in the east, although it has been reported that the Auslro-German advance ad-vance was continuing in some regions notwithstanding the conclusion of peace with Russia and Ukraine.
