Show E GUARDS MM HUH STREETS -. OF THE CIO It was an enthusiastic response that the citizens made to the call for the first drill of the home guard last night. About 250 men and 130 boys presented themselves at the Armory and actively participated in the work. There were present in the lines merchants, mer-chants, bankers, lawyers, doctors, educators ed-ucators and men from all walks of life. They view with each other in displacing" their patriotic interest in the movement and every one thoroughly thor-oughly enjoyed the opportunity afforded. afford-ed. The men were quickly classed for size, assigned in squads to drill, and for an hour and a half were drilled by their squad masters as earnestly as regulars were ever put through their maneuvers. Much credit is due to the committee, to Captain Barton and to the volunteer squad and drill masters for their earnest and effective effec-tive efforts. One body of sixty-four men marched east on Twenty-fourth stieet and along Washington nvenue and made an excellent showing. The letter from the adjutant general gen-eral to C. C. Richards, general chairman chair-man of the committee, and printed elsewhere in this issue, was pifblicly read to the men before they started to group into squads and they seemed very much pleased with their recognition recogni-tion by the governor and military authorities au-thorities of the state. The Junior Guard (the Scout boys), under Captain Robert E. Wilson, made a fine showing and attracted much favorable fa-vorable comment. The committeo will Immediately arrange ar-range for an officers' or drill masters' class, whero the tactics and drills will be discussed, and the leaders fully prepared to present the work, from the latest army manual, to their respective re-spective squads and companies. Company Com-pany formation will also be given Immediate Im-mediate attention and the boys and men classed according to age in order that the best results may bo accomplished accom-plished and most quickly. The next drill will bo held early next week, of which notice through the press will be given, and it is intended in-tended to hold two drills each week. Scout boys from 12 to 17 years of age, who secure their parents' consent; con-sent; all married men of any age;, unmarried men over 25 years of age and those under 25 years, who are on-gaged on-gaged In employments that exempt them from service in the army, navy or national guard are eligible for service ser-vice m the home guard and are invited to join. They canrslgn the enlistment blanks with either of the dozen re cruiting officers whose names wero published a few days ago, or by phoning phon-ing their names in to the committee's headquarters, phone 429, or by coming com-ing to the next drill and there signing the roll. |
