Show oo TRAITOROUS REMARK CAUSES A BIG STIR SALT LAKE, April 19. It. Becker, who says that he is of Belgian ancestry an-cestry and was born in Winona, Minn., was arrested at Alta yesterday by C. C. Carstenson, chief criminal deputy sheriff, on a chargo of having made unpatriotic remarks. Becker was employed in the South Hecla mine. He refused to contribute to the funds subscribed by the employees em-ployees of the mine for th'e purchase of a flag. This he admitted at the county jail last night. That he had made any remarks against the government Becker denied, after he was brought to this city by Deputy Sheriff Carstenson. He admitted, admit-ted, however, having said that ho did not like President "Wilson and that his sympathies were with the Germans as against the English. Becker says that he is 42 years of age and that he has lived all his life in this country, except for fifteen years that he was in Australia and Now Zealand. He said that his experiences experi-ences in tho Erltish colonies had prejudiced pre-judiced him against the English. A riot was nearly precipitated yesterday yes-terday when the men were gathered in the company boarding house and were addressed b Superintendent J. H. Engbeck. Becker is said to have made some contemptuous remark at that time that resulted in his being chased up the stairs of the boarding house by a group of the other miners, whereupon he retracted. Shortly afterward aft-erward Deputy Sheriff Carstensen arrived ar-rived and took Becker into custody, after he had been discharged by the mine superintendent. oo |
