April 19 Marshall Field III, one of America's richest young men, arrived from New York today to enlist as a private in the First Illinois cavalry. He will draw 15 a month. "I beleve every young man of my age, 23, should enlist," he said. "My wife thinks as I do. There Is a lot of flag-raising in New York, but more real recruiting is being done in the middle west. "I think the young men of the country coun-try will do their duty, but there is no doubt that conscription is the fairest fair-est and most efficient method of raising rais-ing an army." |
