Emergency Emer-gency orders for 6,000 Lewis machino guns for the army and navy havo been placed by tho government, although al-though the American-made weapon, which has been tho subject of such bitter controversy, has not been adopted adopt-ed as tho standard light machino gun of the army. Tests of tho Lewis and other light weapons will take place May 1, It was said at the department, as the ro-sult ro-sult of which a final decision would bo reached. The Lewis gun, once rejected reject-ed by tho American government, has become one of the groat factors of entente en-tente armaments on the western front. For tho army 1,300 guns havo been ordered, that being tho limit of available avail-able funds for the purpose. Another 1.700 will bo ordered as soon as additional ad-ditional funds are voted in tho ponding pond-ing army appropriation act. The marine ma-rine corps ordered 2,000 guns some time ago and an additional 1,000 have boon ordered for the navy. r y |
