Show NEW YORK, April 19. There were virtually no exceptions to the general strength of the market at today's opening, open-ing, even the motor group manifesting! a decidedly firmer tone. United States Steel and allied shares scored average gains of a point, with like advances m Mexican Petroleum and Continental Can. Studebakor and Atlantic Gulf and West Indies were almost two points higher and Ohio Gas made a new record on Its rise of 2 3-4 to 142 3-1. Reading and Union Pacific were the strong rails, the only setback in that division being a two-point loss in New Haven. Metals were fractionally fraction-ally better with Industrial Alcohol. Profit taking and bearish pressure exerted the usual effect after the -irst hour, some gains suffering substantial reductions. New Haven increased its loss to 4 1-4 points on selling, induced by the proposed preferred stock issue. Studebaker lost all its rise, American Tobacco fell 7 points and Consolidated Gas 1 3-4. Ohio Gas moved steadily forward, however, to the new record of 143 3-4. United States Steel and other active industrials were stronger, with oils. Pittsbuig and West Virginia Virgin-ia common and preferred rose two and four points respectively, but in the main rails remained sluggish. Bonds were dull and disposed to yield. Chicago Quotations.
