The imperative necessity of voting the bonds was confirmed today by Superintendent Su-perintendent Henry C. Johnson, who has completed a survey of the schools. Mr. Johnson says it is true that In some of the buildings the lives of the pupils aro in danger. In nianv of the buildings a slight accident might occur, oc-cur, making it extremely difficult to get the children out in safety. The Madison and Lewis schools, for example, exam-ple, aro so arranged and in such poor condition as to mako them typical fire traps, Mr. Johnson said, where a Col-llnwood Col-llnwood disaster may be enacted any day. "Any number of fire drills and constant con-stant caution on the part of the teachers," teach-ers," he said, "could not prevent disaster dis-aster In case of emergency, if the buildings were being used to their full capacity." Much Space Wasted. In addition to the great danger, said Mr. Johnson, uch valuable space is wasted In many of tho buildings which havo inadequate heating plants, causing caus-ing waste of time, labor and money "A large number of the buildings aro sadly in need of repair," said Mr. Johnson, "to save the property from ruin, and must be remodeled to protect pro-tect tho health of the children and mako them safe. Knowing of -these imperative needs, wo are earnestly desirous de-sirous of having tho bond issue approved." Survey Reveals Facts Tho superintendent made a complete com-plete survey of all the buildings. Ho visited all school rooms, basements and heating plants. Afterward he conferred con-ferred with the board of education and also with the school teachers and principals. prin-cipals. A goneral teachors' meeting will be held this week. "Ogden has many fine things In its schools." ho said, "many excellent teachers, much valuable equipment, and tho people certainly have reason to feel proud of the great number of fine children and the splendid spirit they show at.school. The thing of spp-cial spp-cial interest.'however, is not so much what a superintendent thinks of tho schools as what is needed to make them thoroughly efficient. First Vital Need. "Among tho improvements needed, the first thing I hopo the people will carefully consider is the physical welfare wel-fare of the children in relation to tho school plants. "The needs must bo pointed out, but many excellent advantages also could be enumerated. Locations in many places are excellent. Some buildings aro arranged to economize time in school work. Some school yards have abundance of space for good playgrounds, play-grounds, which we hopo will bo equipped with modern apparatus." The dato of the bond election will be announced soon. Co-operative efforts ef-forts are being exerted throughout the city to assure the success of the issue. |
