Show People of Ogden and Weber County Called On to Do Their Part THE COMMITTEE OF PREPARATION AND SAFETY. Number 4. TO THE CITIZENS OF OGDEN" AND AVEBER COUNTY: As the food supply of Europe has been greatly reduced on account ac-count of the -withdrawal of millions of men from European farms and factories to do service in the trenches and on the battle fields; and as our country is now at Avar -with the Imperial German government and "will require the -withdrawal of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of our own citizens from their farms and factories, and as the heavy demand upon this country, for foodstuffs, which has al-roady al-roady consumed all of our surplus, will be greatly increased, it is absolutely necessarj' that all of us who are not in the fighting line shall exert our utmost -efforts to secure the production of every bushel of grain, and other food products, that can be raised the present season. It is quite as essential for us to raise grain, potatoes and hay as it is for others to manufacture powder, shot and shell. Our nation needs a million soldiers in the grain fields of America quite as bad as it needs a million soldiers in the trenches ,pf France. And, in the present crisis, it is just as patriotic to drill seed in a wheat field as it is to drill men into soldiers, and how much plcasanter it will be to do it. 'Jhen men who will be in the trenches, on the battle fields and in the training camps, whether British, French, Italian, Russian or American, will all be fighting the same enemy, for the same cause, and must be fed; and we must do all we can to help feed them, as well as to feed those who remain at home. To assist in this imperative service your Committee of Preparation Prepara-tion and Safety invites the owners of all vacant lots and cultivated lands that are adapted to the growth of agricultural crops, and that will not be cultivated by the owners the present season, to tender tho use of sucli lands to this committee for the cultivation and (Continued on, Page 7) PEOPLE OF Sen CALLED TO BUTYlf (Continued from Page 3) 1 growth of foodstuffs, by persons to be designated by the committee. H "Wo do not desire to profit out of this service and shall allow all Q profits to go to those who do the work. All we hope to accomplish 1 is to secure the greatest possible yield from the lands of Weber I county. I As the time for seeding is near at hand, please send your offer, IS by mail, immediately to Hon. D. D. McKay, chairman of our sub- 1 committee on agriculture and livestock, at our headquarters, room 6, I in the Utah National Bank building, Ogden, or by 'phono to No. 429, 1 our headquarters. I In your' offer state the size of the lot or tract of land, where B located, whether you have water for the irrigation of the land, and H if not whether, and from what source, water can be procured. 1 If any fanner is short of seed for any part of the land he desires I to cultivate and will advise Mr. McKay, ho will arrange to furnish I what seed may be required. 1 In behalf of the Committee, C. C. RICILAJRDS, " 1 April 9, 1917. , Chairman. 1 THE COMMITTEE OP PREPARATION AND SAFETY. " 1 Number 5. I The committee does not intend to receive any profits, whatever, from these transactions but desires that all of the income derived ) shall accrue to those who do the work. Our only aim is to increase ' the yield in Weber county, as much as possible, in order that there ' may be no shortage and that prices may not be unreasonably high. Any person who desires to seed, cultivate and harvest the crops j from any of such lands may send in his or her name, age and resi- f dence, by 'phone or by letter to Hon. D. D.
