Show H WHY THE WORLD CONDEMNS H THE GERMANS. B I At the beginning of tho European B war a vast majority of Americans fl -were indifferent as to "which sido 1 might win. In this country our school m histories had taught us to hav.e no B ' love for Great Britain, and, if there H ' was any prejudice tho bias was m i against England. M j But as the war progressed, public H opinion turned from Germany. Final- B ly lntenso feeling was created. B j The same turning away from the B German government has been shown B by all other neutral nations. B Thus the verdict of mankind is be- B ing recorded. B Lately the United States has been B forced to denounce tho German 1m- H perial govornmenL Last week Cuba H did likewise, and now Brazil is about H to 1 Even tho Chinese, the most immov- H ablo of people, havo been aroused and H they, too, are arrayod against the ' frightfulness of tho Kaiser. Tho world has passed judgment, con- B demnlng tho brutalities of tho mill- fl tary arm of Germany. H As detailed information comes out m of Belgium and northern France, the B world Is horrified over the crimes the M Germans have committed against clv- B ilization. One of the worst offenses B has been tho enslaving of men and B . tho violating of the -women and girls B in the territory invaded. In tho last B issue of the Literary Digest is an B article from a war correspondent who B , has been in tho district evacuated by B ' the Germans and his story of "what he H has seen and heard is appalling. Men H havo been mado slaves and young H girls carried away, not by the hun- H dreds, but by the thousands. H Of course, many of the accusations H from the side of tho allies must be ac- I cepted with reservation, but tho re- 1 ports from our own officials in TJel- gium confirm much that has been told H ' of brutalized militarism. And that is the ono big thing which " looms large before the American peo- I pie. A great military victory for Ger- i many would mean eventually the plac- fl 1 ing of a heavy yoke on Americans fl and perhaps some form of slavery. |
