Show STATE WILL AOil THE ' OGDEN PUN BY HAVING A GOUNCIL OF DEFENSE Salt Lake Tribune: A State Council of Dofenso for Utah may be the means of bringing about the speedy and practical mobilization of even' resource of the state if certain cer-tain suggestions which will be made to Governor Simon Bamberger are put into effect. While tho federal government is responsible re-sponsible for all preliminary work along these lines, It is not unlikely that Utah may work out Its own salvation sal-vation as to food consen'ation, the collection col-lection of the data around which may swing the whole state organization for military effectiveness and turn over to the government all this information infor-mation in available form. Throughout the slate all good citizens citi-zens men, women and children are asking tnemselves this question: "How can I serve my country." Leading citizens are preparing to give every man, woman and child in Weber county something to do to aid in tho defense of the republic. The plan Is most comprehensive and is regarded re-garded as practical. Four of the committees appointed by a general cominitteo in Ogden arc regarded as of tho utmost immediate importance. And of tho four the one of tho most Importance is probably the committee on agriculture. This committee Is headed by Representative Representa-tive D. D. McKay of Huntsville, who is a member of the state legislature and president of the Utah farm bureau. Make Land Productive. This committee on agriculture is planning to see that every bit of ground in Weber -county capable of immediate cultivation is planted to cereals, vegetables and foodstuffs of various kinds. Already vacant lots are being plowed up and will soon be transformed into gardens The, committee com-mittee is obtaining the consent of the owners of all vacant property to plant grain and foodstuffs on these lots and will afterward agree on how the expense ex-pense is to bo met and where the profits are to go. To Encourage Enlistments. Committees will probably be named in each of tho cities having national guard units to encourage young men to enlist in tho guard. In Salt Lake the enlistments in the guard have ranged from one to five a day for the past two weeks. If Salt Lake Is to , fill up tho four units stationed in this city to full war strength it will bo necessary to secure twenty-five recruits re-cruits a day for tho next two weeks. Recruiting committees would undoubtedly undoubt-edly prove of great benefit in accomplishing accom-plishing this result. Another committee of great importance import-ance is the committee on secret service. ser-vice. Senator Joseph Chez is the chairman of this committee in Ogden and tho other members of the committee commit-tee are known only to himself. This committee ascertains the facts about suspected cases of disloyalty and promptly reports the same through its chairman to the federal and s'tate authorities. au-thorities. The activity of this commit tee Is, of course, of the utmost Importance Import-ance to the safety of the state and nation. -oo |
