Show SERVICES W EASTER CHURCH Easter day was observed with flowers flow-ers and song at the three services of the First Presbyterian church yesterday. yester-day. The church was richly decorated with a profusion of tulips, lilacs, iris, acacia, palms and Easter lilies. " Tho American flag had a prominent place on the pulpit, and the bright hues of the spring flowers, together with the beautiful colors of the Stars and Stripes made a scene of attractive beauty. The Easter music was of a high order or-der The quartet of Ogden's best talent tal-ent pleased with six numbers. Mr. Leslie H. Saville sang Parker's "Jerusalem" "Jeru-salem" in excellent voice. Mr. W. H. Manning interpreted Speaks' "Still, Still With Thee" with fine clearness and effect, and Mrs. Alice Bowring Clark was at her best in singing Gounod's Gou-nod's "Oh, Divine Redeemer." Mrs. Charles H. Stevens, though suffering of a severe cold, added greatly to the quartet in the rendition of three contralto con-tralto solo parts. Miss Florence Jcpperson more than fulfilled the expectation of her hearers When a soloist has been accepted by some of the leading musical organizations organiza-tions of the nation much is expected, but Miss Jepperson so finely and feelingly feel-ingly rendered her seven solos that all declared she was more than worthy of what had been said of her. Miss Louise Pierco and Miss Lydia Edmunds as accompanists added much to the program. The Sir Knights of El Monte Com-mandery Com-mandery attended the service of song in a body. Speaking at this service upon the theme of tho resurrection message of peace, Rev. Carver said that for each and every great need God had given ample satisfaction, but that this satisfaction must be won. It has taken ages of toil and thought and suffering to reach the degree of satisfaction for the hunger of the body, the hunger of tho mind for truth, and the desire of the moral sense for right that Is theirs today. Famine, persecution and battle have been endured en-dured to attain it. So when the truth of the brotherhood of man and fatherhood father-hood of God, which is the basis of the Christ message for the world's as well as the individual's peace was declared it had to overcome greed and selfish hate to attain it. "Thcro has been much said," Rev. Carver declared, "concerning the failure fail-ure of Christianity in the present war. No doubt all that has been said has beon true if viewed aright, but it is not all the truth, for while Christianity Christian-ity has not done all that its friends would have liked for it to do, the samo or worse can bo said all else. Governments that for years have stood for honor, have violated and repudiated repudi-ated solemn treaties, peoples who have siood for right, mercy and justice have become debauched with hate, while liberty, law and training have been forgotten. Yes, Christianity has not been tho power it might have been, but when all else have failed where can more hope be found than in the same Christianity? Especially is this true when the past two years have seen millions in gold and supplies given giv-en freely in tho name of Christianity to alleviate. -suffering and want. This Easter has the great message of hope for the ages to come. A world In hate cannot long endure that bitterness. Mankind will weary of splto. revenge and bitterness. Where can new mercy mer-cy and love be fostered? The Easter saw no bitterness on" the part of thoso whom the world, the leaders and racial ra-cial haters had made to suffer. Disciples Dis-ciples of Christ forgave. Paul and the martyrs never harbored hate. Love and confidence flourished on the spot where hate had been most bitter. Europe Eu-rope and America will not desire to hato long for the self-scourge of hate becomes unbearable on the haters. Christ alone in his teaching and love can resurrect love, mercy and goodwill good-will from people's hardened with cruel bitterness. The resurrection of this lovo will be tho demand of the world soon, and to the Christian teaching must they go to find it The healing power of the love of Christ will be demanded soon where now is tho bitterness bit-terness of war and strife." |
