Show GUIS 10 CLOSE Bill TO HE CI SHORTAGE Pig tin is scarce. Tho supplies from England have been cut off, and. the govornmont and tin can manufacturers manufactur-ers have requested tho Utah Canners' association not to pack beans, hominy and other products which are not perishable. per-ishable. This news is confirmed by II. L. Horrington, president of the association. associa-tion. The Utah packers obtain their cans from the Ogden plant of the American Can company, of which J. G. Leonard is superintendent, and Mr. Leonard has issued a letter on the subject, enclosing en-closing the government's request to restrict canning to perishable food products. Tomatoes and peas and other per-ishablo per-ishablo products will bo given preference prefer-ence by the packers this year. Beans, corn and other non-perishable products will, of course, be preserved pre-served in natural form without loss to the producers. The demand for these products is perennial. Much of the large new acreage to be put in crops through the mobilizing mobiliz-ing efforts of the Committee on Preparation Prep-aration and Safety will bo devoted to tomatoes and peas, and a still larger acreage to sugar beets, for which there is an insatiable demand. Inquiry among the Ogden sugar men reveals a rare spirit of optimism concerning tho future. They all say that, notwithstanding the war, prosperity pros-perity is to continue; that seven fat years are assured for the farmers and business men. |
