Show .2-00 THE FOOD SUPPLY OF THE NATION. The Committee of Preparation and Safety has received a circular letter from the secretary of the department of commerce, at Washington, D. C, addressed to commercial organizations and which sets out, in very plain terms, the urgent necessity of increasing in-creasing the food supply of the country. coun-try. The letter follows: "The war in which we are now engaged en-gaged is a war of economic resources. It is absolutely essential to the successful suc-cessful prosecution of the war that everyone make his or her contribution to the economic welfare of the country. coun-try. The production of food is a vital and present duty resting on every man and woman who can help it along. Without food workmen can not work, nor can .armies fight. "The food supply of the country must be increased, and I urge upon you to co-operate In every way with the department of agriculture in its campaign to increase the crops of the country. Will you not lake this subject sub-ject up at once with the membership of your association, pointing out to them the needs of the situation and urge Immediate action? I suggest that every oiganization should have a committee on the production of foodstuffs food-stuffs and that the assistance of women's wo-men's organizations be enlisted in the campaign. "I need not point out that the planting plant-ing season is at hand, and that any action to be effective must be taken at the earliest possible moment In the United States, as in the -warring countries, of Europe, the effects of this struggle will be felt by everyone and economic preparedness will greatly lessen the burden that we must carry." |
