Show I ll , I HOW I REDUCED I MRS. EVA LANE 30 I; V . "-'Li I i j "p" ODAY I ahull tell you of my fourth $ j week's work with Mrs. Eva Lane, my model, whom, under the mcdleul direc- j tion of Dr. Lena K. Sadler of the Chi- t ; cngo Institute of Therapeutics, I reduced from 20-1 !. pounds to 1GSV1: pounds injix weeks.' Diet :ind exercise were Ihe only incasuics J used iu my work of mincing Mrs. Lone. T Inn great measure the .success of this rc-, rc-, during experiment with Mrs. Lane was her 5 own desire to get her weight down aud her ; peisistent will power and .self-denial. With- out these qualifications it ia impossible to I bring your figure hack to its normal condition. You may put yourself on a starvation diet, i or you may go in for a slow diet and lose pounds, but if you don't exercise daily along with the dieting you will succeed only in leav- ' ing the body shriveled, wrinkled, and un- comoly. Mrs. Lane was as faithful at the beginning of her fourth week's woik -as she was at the ' beginning of the first week. The improve- meut in her appearance with the loss of nineteen nine-teen pounds bj' the three week-, previous exercise exer-cise and diet was decidedly marked. The daily showers after the cxeicising, followed I bv the vlgoiouh rubbing, gave her skin a clear and healthy glow. Mrs. Lane kept up the massage of her neck and face daily with u good cold cream, Out- 1 ward and upward toward the temples was the ' movement she' described in the massage of the lower part of her face. Ller faithful adherence adher-ence to this daily mnssaging kept the muscles of her face from sagging. And this is -an important im-portant feature of reducing which you cannot afford to overlook. Mrs. Lane followed the massage of both face and neck with a rubbing over of either camphorated ice or plaiu ice to contract the poM-s. make firm the skin, and ' prcve'nt the unsightly " wattles," which 'arc almost sure to result under the chin if precaution precau-tion is not taken to prevent them, During the fourth weelc my model succeeded in working off live pounds, ranking a total of twenty-four pounds at the end of the fourth week. But for a single lapse from her almost heroic he-roic capacity for self-denial, Mrs. Lane would Mrs. Lane decided " it was nil off bctwceu'hgr rind chocolates." ' Hcit, wine, or alcohol' in any form whatever what-ever was strictly taboo in the period of reduc- l tion of Mrs. Lane. The natural effect of taking tak-ing alcohol is to make the body obese. It robs the tissues of oxygen which they would other, wise use for combustion. 'astc matters cannot can-not be got rid of, consequently, and the body naturally takes on weight. On abstaining from alcohol the superfluous tissue is Vurned away and the weight of the bod i educed and a look and a feeling of jouth is recovered. During the fourth week of Mrs. Lane's work the importance of exercises for the trunk were felt as keenly as in the beginning of my experiment ex-periment with her. On account of the loss of weight on waist nnd hips and to keep the vital organs within in good working condition it was necessary to keep the muscles of that legion constantly exercised to insure strength and firmness. The four exercises illustrated on this page nre the new exercises I gave Mrs. Lane at the beginning of her fourth week. Exercise 1. This is a continuation really of the single leg raising movement I described lust week, the difference is that both legs are raised together instead of singly. Stretched Hat on the floor with crown of hend and heels resting on the floor, knees stiff and toes 6trctchcd to utmost point, slowly laisc both legs as high as possible, as in illustration ; then let them back to the floor slowly again while you count eight, always keeping knees stilT and toes stretched. B'gin with five times. Rest a few minutes and do five times again. Then gradually increase the number of times dnily. This reduces thighs, abdomen, ankles, aud waist Exercise 2. This side body bending exercise i educes waist, side, bust, and the fat under the arms most effectively. Stand ciect with knees stiffened and arms raised high over head. By bending the body at the waist only try to touch the tips of your fingers to the floor on the opposite side to the hand you use. Alternate Alter-nate with the other hand. Begin with live times each and increase to fifty or seventy-five. seventy-five. Exercise li. This squatting reduces abdomen, thighs, calves, and ankles. Stimd erect- witfc, feet apart, hands resting on hips. Rise upon the toes, then sink the body to the floor, bend-iug bend-iug the knees sharply until the thighs and legs nro doubled upon each other and the weight of the cntir body Is supported by the toes, "ne trunk aaoet be maintained perfectly erect throughout the movement. Return to original position. Repeat five times to start with, gradually increasing to thirty or forty. Exercise 4. This is a deep breathing exercise. exer-cise. With hands at sides and body erect bc- have been able to bhow a Iohs of six pounds : for this fourth week. Her love of chocolate ; was her undoing. On the third day of tho week when I weighed her she showed a gain of a pound over the previous day's weight ', record. On crws ciamiiiBtion I Bound a had succumbed to the lures and wiles of a ; box of chocolates and bonbons a friend had ff sent her " to teaso her." m Face to face with this indisputable evidence If ofthe-loBC alBnity between swet3 and fat I gin to inhale u long, deep breath, slowly raising rais-ing both band9 as jou inhale. Raise hands as high as you can. Then lower them back to original position, slowly exhaling as yon lower them. Repeat ten times nt first, increasing gradually to one hundred times. Besides the nbovc exercise, Mrs. Lane repeated re-peated every duy the twelve exercises already given her and described in my three previous articles. The squatting exercise was a little difficult for her tho first day, but before the I jH -- - -M ? end of the week by her persistent effort she could do it fifty times with case. The side body bending described above, too, she found a hit hard at firBt, but by sticking to it sh could touch tho tips of her fingers to the floor the fifth day of the week. Mrs, Lano didn't slump on her walks cither duriug the fourth week. They varied between three, four, and five miles a day, Mrs. Lanes own words about the value of her reducing exercises carry an excellent con- S, i,'ry .vg" J-yamufci jiimiBH jjjul i, MUX victiou. " I have to be grateful for one thing more than anything else," she eald. " I have learned how to breathe properly. When I walk I breathe, and I believe that is why 1 feel so well." Her attention to breathing certainly cer-tainly had much to do with her healthy and happy condition, too. As on previous weeks, I changed Mrs. Lane's diet during the fourth week. It follows: 7&0 a. m. One-half grapefruit, without sugar; soft boiled ess, o butter; small dry roll or piece of toast; coffee, without cream oc M 10 a- m. Glass of lemonade, without sugai M 1 p. m. Small bowl clear broth, and all slu H wnnted of lcttuco or cucumbers, prepared with M out oil or cream dressing or celery. H 7 p. in. Three ounces of steak, or chicken M or roast beef, or fish ; big helping or sprouts H onions, asparagus, string beans, prepared with H out butter or cream or oils; coffee withotl H sugar or cream. |
