Show SCHOOL BOARD ACTS ON USUI QUESTIONS According to a decision of the city board of education made last night, the students of the high school who havo advanced more than one-half year on a course chosen uuder the clectlvo 83'stem, recently abolished, will be permitted to finish their two, three or four year courses under tho same plan. If conditions are such, however, that a change can be made by freshmen or sophomores to tho new proscribed course system, in the opinion of the high school principal, the change will be made. This matter was brought up at the executive meeting of tho board by Director Wade Johnson and drew an expression from Director H. H. Henderson, Hen-derson, father of the resolution, which Inaugurated the prescribed course plan a week ago, to the effect that the resolution was not intended to work a hardship upon or to set any student hack in his chosen course of work. Tho other directors were of the same opinion and the interpretation interpreta-tion of tho resolution given above was agreed upon Half year Ninth grade (now abolished) students and Eighth grade graduates who enter the high school next Tuesday will be required to choose one of tho prescribed courses cours-es of study. Tho school board held two meetings last night, the first a closed session with Principals J. E. Beeson of the high school, John Wintlo of the Lewis Junior, D. H. Adams of the Central junior, and W. L. Underwood of the Dec Junior high schools. At this session, ses-sion, matters relative to the work of installing and carrying out tho prescribed pre-scribed course of Btudy plan and of sending Ninth grade Btudonts Into the high school as freshmen wcro the principal questions discussed. The other meeting was the executive execu-tive session and aside from the action ac-tion with regard to the interpretation of the new course of study plan for tho high school, only routine matters were considered. Supt. J. M. Mills presented a communication com-munication from the Fashion Show executive committee asking that the Junior high school students be permitted permit-ted to give a demonstration of physical phys-ical education in the business district on Friday, September 24, as a feature of the Fashion Show. On motion of Director Henderson this "was referred to the school principals with power to act. Another motion introduced by Director Henderson giving the teachers' committee authority to hire the teachers necessary to begin the school year, was also passed. The question of transporting junior high school students north of Seventh street to the Central, Dee and Lewis schools was brought before the board by the clerk. President Hyrum Pin-groe Pin-groe spoke in favor of carrying out the same plan followed out last year and Director Williams spoke against it, saying there were now paved sidewalks side-walks throughout that part of town and that he believed tho students could walk to school without much inconvenience in-convenience for a couple of months longer at least The question was a new one to Director Henderson and he stated that he could not vote one way or tho other without considering it. A motion then prevailed to carry the matter over until tlie next meeting. meet-ing. Before adjournment, bills to the amount of $169.40 for repairs to the school buildings were ordered paid. |
