Show RUSSIAN PRESS GROWS HOPEFUL Appointment of Noted General Gen-eral Alexiev as Chief of Staff Brings Confidence in Future Operations. Petrograd, SepL 4, via London, Sept. 4, l':20 p. m. The appointment of General Alexiex as chief of staff to Grand Duke Nicholas and of General Gen-eral Ruzsky as commander of the northern armies of Russia has led to the adoption of a hopeful tone by the Russian press, which expresses confidence con-fidence in the 'future operations of the forces of the empire. General Alexiev Al-exiev made a notable reputation In his conduct of tho Russian operations against Austria Tho Russian offensive on the right bank of the Viliya river has slowed down. Russian military critics are convinced that the aim of the Germans Ger-mans is to cross the river Dvina, take possession of the railway line between be-tween Riga and Dvinsk, capture Vilna and also the fortress of Rovno far to the south and entrench for the autumn au-tumn and winter. Already they are within ten miles of Rovno and are working against the northern end of the line, especially at Lida, about 40 miles southeast of Vilna. It is believed here that the Russians Rus-sians have excellent chances of successfully suc-cessfully defending the Dvina line. Alexander Guchkorr has criticised the conduct of the war, and suggested that a deputation of the Petrograd council be sent to the emp.eror bearing bear-ing a message in line with that adopted adopt-ed by the council and citizens of Moscow. |
