Show TWflllilCTS III I Jl CAUGHT ST Carl Scott, a 80-year-old negro, and Alfred Wheeler, a 24-yoar-old Spani-ard, Spani-ard, were arraigned in the municipal .court this morning on eharges of petit larceny. Both entered pleas f cuil-i cuil-i ty. They were arrested last Sunday afternoon bv Sergeant 0 H Mohl-man Mohl-man and Patrolman T. H B. Bla burn. jr.. at a colored report on Wall avenue, known in police circles as the 1 0 1 Ranch." Testimony in the case brought out the f.nct tfiat both nn h:id recently completed sentences in the IMab sta.e penitentiary, Scott one year for arson, and Wheeler two years for grand lar-cenv. lar-cenv. While in the penitentiary, fl Wheeler was foreman in the laundry, n position of considerable trust Their arrest was brought about by good detective work on the part Of the fo arresting officers, who learn ed that a man with a badly cut hand had visited a local drug store to ob-tain ob-tain first aid last Thursday evening. Clues led them to the "10 Ranch" and they found Wheeler aud Scott there, seated at the table for dinner. When I he officers entered the house, the young Spaniard tried to hide his hand under the table but his effort failed. When the officers asked him how it had been cut. he said that he and SeoU hn.l been scuffling in the bou?e and he bad pushed his hand through a window. An Investigation showed that none of the windows were broken and. at ter a short application of the third degree Wheeler said he and Scott had been drinking last Thursday night I and while stageering along Grant ave- nue,' uear Twenty sixth street, he had fallen through a window at the Hot-I Hot-I ;,.ling grocery stor- in the Bennett block This statement was found to be true but the proprietor of the store did not report the breaking of the window to the officers. I While at the "101 Ranch. ' Ofn- cers Mohlman and Blackburn located a coat which bad been stolen from the borne of Mrs A. C. Hunt. 2370 Lincoln avenue, nearly two weeks ago. and a raincoat, the owner of which has not yet been located They also ' found three stolen rocking chairs and later Wheeler confessed the theft of all the articles implicating Scott. 1 Scott, the officers state, was not J fcazed at anv time by the "third dc- i gree' and denied everything which I pointed to his gu'.lt. untU confronted 1 with Irrefutable evidence. In court d this morning, he stated that Wheeler -1 stole the raincoat from on automo- I bile that was standing In front of th-? J Colonel Hudson building, on Hudson 1 avenue. This, however, was denied i by Wheeler. j The judge took the case under ad- . visemenL William Grace war arraigned on a charge of petit larceny, the complaint alleging that he had stolen three pairs of scissors from the Richardson and Grant store. He pleaded not guilty and the trial was set for Friday morning. morn-ing. George Shepherd was given a five-day suspended sentence after ! pleading guilty to a charge of drunk- I enness.
