Show CLAIMS CHINESE ARE PERSECUTED Salt Lake, March 14. .More charges against the police department In connection con-nection with the arrest of Chinese for gambling were made to Mayor Park yesterday by J. R. Haas, an "attorney, "at-torney, representing several Plum alley al-ley Chinese. The mayor and the attorney engaged en-gaged In a warm verbal tilt, during which thc latter charged that the police po-lice were violating the constitutional rights of his clients by trying to forco them to leave the city by frequent arrest and persecution. "The police are acting under orders and arc doing what they are told to do," retorted- the mayor. "Some undesirables have been driven out of this city and some others probably will be driven out. Your clients have constitutional rights, I admit, but so have other citizens in general; and men who violato thc law are going to be harassed and arrested until they quit it or else leave the city." Haas Makes Charges. Maas came to the mayor on behalf of Chin John, whose arrest and detention deten-tion by the police last week was the subject of an Inquiry by the commission commis-sion Thursday morning. .Haas charged charg-ed that his client had been held a prisoner for twenty-four hours without with-out a charge and that he was finally charged with vagrancy, in spite of the fact that he operates and owns a restaurant on Orpheum avenue. "Deiectlve Leichter told me that he would arrest John as often as he wanted," declared Haas. "Also he told Charlie Fong and Wing Jack that they would have to leave thc city. The3C men are in business here, and under tho constitution arc entitled to acquire property and to the pursuit pur-suit of happiness. The police department de-partment has no right to drive them out of town.'" Mu6t,Obey the Law. "They arc entitled to all that and more, too, but they must acquire their property and pursue their happiness by lawful methods," the mayor replied. re-plied. "But by what authority do the police po-lice presume to drive business men out of this city by persecution?" demanded de-manded Haas. "They arc not driving business men out of thc city, unless those men prove undesirable residents by constant con-stant violation of thc law," the mayor said. "Whatever they do. they do under orders and not by mere caprico as you intimate." After the conference Mayor Park said he was tired of the constant charges and insinuations being hurled at tho police department on tho Chinese Chi-nese question. "If anybody wants to start something some-thing on this subject let him go ahead," he declared. "He will have his hands full." |
