Show A Sim Pumping: Plant. : I A sun-power pumping plant, in- I vented by .Mr. Frank Shunian, has recently heen inRtalled In JSgypt. A , short" time ago it was Inspected by Lord Kitchener, who was much interested in-terested in It, The principle of this system of power production Is simple. sim-ple. The heat of the sun I used to raise steam in a scries of gener- i ators, each consisting of a flat sheet- j' Iron box threo foet square, with plates only' one Inch apart, and covered cov-ered by two sheets of glass one Inch "part. The boxes are massed to- gether over a epaco of 5,000 square feet, and have a heat collecting j area of about 10,300 squaro feet. This area is made up of 26 rowa of boxes, each row containing 22 sin- 5lo units. Each box. which is painted with a dull black composition com-position which does not reflect more than 6 per cent of the sun's rays, rests upon a . layer of nonconducting nonconduct-ing material. The resulting insulation insula-tion is so good that, if desired, a " teniperatwo of 400 degrees Fahren- H heit can bo obtained in the boxes. The boxes are placed on trestles, and i can be set at angles to suit tho sun, while , mirrors are used to dl- rect additional sunlight on to the ' boilers. On one side of each box la a pipe through which water can i bo admitted, and on tho other sldo Is a pipe for taking away the steam thus generated to the' engine. .' . ' ' |
