Show LONG SCHOOL DAYJPPOSED Mrs. Ella Flagg Young Will Make Recommendation in Spite of Opposition. Chicago, 111 , March 11 Neither 12 mouths of continuous school nor a class day lasting until 5 or G;30 o'clock, in the afternoon, is favored by Chicago school teachers. However, How-ever, it is probable that one or the other of these plans will soon be recommended to the board of education edu-cation by Mrs. Ella Flagg Young, superintendent su-perintendent of Chicago public schools. The propositions, neither of which provided for additional salaries, were placed before the teachers at meet ings throughout the city yesterday. Reports to Mrs. Young today will show that the teachers were almost unanimous in opposition to both plana These arguments were advanced by tho teachers against the lengthening of the school seasons. That a school day lasting from ) o'clock In the morning until 5 or 5:30 In the afternoon would be a menace to the child's health and that it would be so tiresome to the growing child that no educational advantages would bo gained. That the summer vacation is absolutely abso-lutely essential to the health and welfare wel-fare of not only the pupil but of the teacher as well. That tho teachers are now underpaid under-paid and that this additional work, for wliich they would receive no additional addi-tional compensation, would be an imposition. im-position. Under the plan for the elimination of the summer vacation. It was suggested sug-gested that the teachers could take a vacation of three months without pay. Teachers who so desired would bo permitted to work the en lire 12 months, but would be required to take a threo months' vacation without pay once every four years. |
