There is a species of wasp that has learned the art of using a stone as a tamping iron. A number of naturalists natural-ists have observed them, and Dr. L. O. Howard of the United States bureau bur-eau of entomology vouches for the truth of the statement. They burrow deep into the ground and close up their hole when away from home with a small stone, over which they scrape dry earth to conceal the entrance. When Dr. Williston first discovered Mrs. Wasp in the act of using a tamping tamp-ing iron he was afraid to publish his discovery for fear he would "be laughed laugh-ed at and disbelieved. But others found it to be true, and some of them saw her in the act of further concealing conceal-ing her burrow by covering it with leases or other disguising objects. Several naturalists in watching the wasps found that each mistress of a household had a distinct personality a personality of mind rather than of appearance. One was painstaking, another careless; one was industrious, another lazy. One seamed tremendously tremend-ously hi a hurry and not bothered about non-essentials; another was the possessor of an artistic temperament, closing her burrow with great care and sweeping away every particle or dhst. One was slovenly, carry her captured caterpillar in a very careless care-less way, while another was as fastidious fastid-ious as she could be, contemplating her nice nest with evident pride. This delightful little wasp is a member mem-ber of the family of solitary wasps. They live in burrows and know nothing noth-ing about paper nests and social life. They cannot cather pollen from the flowers, but have to capture Insects and paralyze them with their stings. This puts the unfortunate spider or caterpillar to sleep for a long time, and thus keeps them as an available food supply for their young. One species capture sand flies, but Instead of stinging them, cruari their necks so as to destroy the principal nerve of the fly's body. They always find the proper spot for crushing the life out 'of the fly. When the fly is dead the wasp picks it up in her hind legs and flies away, with the whole whole . body of the fly sticking far out bo-, bo-, hind her. : Some of these wasps are very hard workers. One of them was observed to start to work at 3 o'clock one afternoon, af-ternoon, and she kept right at it for forty-two hours at a stretch. Her burrow was over a foot long and was made in n blackberry sialk. But when she had her home completed It was a home worth while. Dr. Howard Is trying to introduco a new species of wasp into the United States. It has an especial fondness for cockroaches. It comes Into the house and hunts out the cockroaches just as a ferret goes after a lot of rats. It stings the cockroach and puts it away in some crevice, as u squirrel buries a chestnut, going back for it when it gets hungry. , " M I Ogden Business Directory Classified Alphabetically (Abstracts of Title Is the title to your property clear?
