Show OFFERS BUILDING AS QUARTERS FOR A POBLIC MARKET W. J. Stephens of this city is ready to aid in solving the question of a market place, under the supervision of the city commissioners. He 'recently 're-cently erected a three-story building on Washington avenue between Twenty-sixth and Twentyseventh streets, that hria a floor apace of 66 by 122 ' feet and he states that he will arrange ar-range booths on the ground floor for the accommodation of farmers who desire to bring their products to the city and sell them direct to the 'consumer. 'con-sumer. The building has a basement base-ment of the same dimensions that may be used. Speaking of the proposition of establishing es-tablishing a farmers' market in the city, Mr. Stephens said that he was greatly in favor of .the plan and that, to encourage its lnaueuration. he would furnish his large building at a nominal rental and would permit the farmers to use part of the space free of charge for a short time to demonstrate its effectiveness. He also al-so has a large area of vacant ground at the rear of tho pMace where farmers farm-ers could tie their teams while they were selling their products. The building is so arranged that the produce pro-duce could be taken Into the selling booths from the rear, avoiding confusion con-fusion on the avenue facing the building. build-ing. A short time ago a delegation of ladies la-dies of one of the societies of the city called on the board of city commissioners com-missioners and requested that a market mar-ket place be established under direction direc-tion of the city board. The matter mat-ter was taken under advisement, with the promise that It would be given due consideration. Since that time members of the board of commission' ers have said that the city could not establish a municipal market, as there is no authority in law for the municipality to go into business of that kind, but that it would be within with-in the power of the board to give a public market place police protection and also have the health department look after the sanitary regulations, so as to insure that only pure farm products be sold to the people. One difficult question with the ladies la-dies has been that they knew of no suitable place where the market could be conducted. . They are deslrouB of getting a place reasonably close tc the business center of the city and having suitable buildings f6r the accommodation ac-commodation of the enterprise. Nov that Mr. Stephens has become interested inter-ested in the project, It is possible that some definite action may be taken. ta-ken. ,nn I |
